Get Constructive: Five ways to use your hands to create something beautiful

You don’t have to be “artistic” to get your hands dirty and create something. It’s the perfect weather to get outside and make something big like a birdbath or nature path, or, stay inside in the air conditioning and get your D.I.Y. on. Here are 5 ways you can get crafty.

1. Make a birdbath Why not make something that you enjoy building and that other living creatures enjoy all summer long? The opportunities to create an original and unique birdbath are endless. Old trash can lids, satellite dishes, and more can be re-purposed for this project. One easy way to do this with kids is to flip a terracotta planter upside down to serve as the base of the birdbath. Then, glue the drainage dish, right side up to the top, fill with water and boom! You have yourself a tiny birdbath.

2. Make something delicious Get your hands dirty in the kitchen! Art isn’t always something you hang on your wall or display in your yard, it can also be the food we eat. Try making something you never have before. Do you need an idea? Check out one of our many cooking classes, like the Daily Classics Made Easy. Cooking is an activity that can be enjoyed alone or with a partner. If you’re of age, crack open a bottle of wine, throw on some tunes, and get into it.

3. Grow a mini herb garden Your kitchen counter is the perfect place for a mini herb garden. You can use recycled coffee grounds containers, egg cartons or a milk jug to start. Begin with some seeds and potting soil, then add water and plenty of light and watch your herbs take root. Soon, you won’t have to look further than your home for fresh flavor.

4. Create a nature path Join forces with your local government or nature conservancy to create or rehab a nature path. What’s better than making something everyone can enjoy? Trails fall under disrepair, need routine maintenance or just don’t exist. Volunteer your time and your hands to spend a day or two in nature – your neighbors will thank you.

5. Turn old clothing into art Old t-shirts and sweatshirts can take up a lot of space. Many of us hold on to items like these for sentimental reasons, long after we’ve grown out of the clothes. It’s time to put them to good use and get some work in with your hands. Turn these items into blankets! T-shirt quilts are great because you can finally put those good memories to use. Snuggle up in your new favorite cotton blanket for movie night or use it as a conversation piece when guests come over!
